Taylors’ Grinder lends its impressive power to recovery efforts

The Taylors Contracting team has been very busy helping to clear up windthrow to open up road access following the recent weather events in Nelson Tasman. One of the key tools in our arsenal is our Terex CBI Magnum Force 6800CT Horizontal Grinder. The grinder can process more than 200 tonnes of residue per hour.

The material it’s processing from the recent event includes native trees and pine trees that were blown over by the high winds. It’s a powerful piece of gear which can process whole trees, stumps, and logs. To help ensure the end bi-product is usable, tannalised wood is identified and removed from the residue prior to the remaining materials being processed by the grinder.

Taylors has owned the grinder since 2019 and it has been used around Nelson Tasman since then, most recently to help clean up flood debris along the Motueka River West Bank Road. Following the most recent heavy rain and high winds which have caused so much damage, Taylors was contracted by the Tasman District Council and Nelson Tasman Civil Defence to help with recovery efforts.

“The grinder is a great tool that makes a real difference,” says Charlie Taylor. “It produces a usable bi-product and is powerful enough to get the job down well and in a timeframe that allows the recovery to process as quickly as it can. There’s a lot to do and gear like this is really vital.

“A key difference with this grinder is it’s easily relocatable. We are able to move it on a transporter and then walk it into particular sites using its remote-controlled tracks, rather than having to tow it in. This allows us to access many more locations than comparable gear.”
