Project Description
WINNER: CCNZ Nelson Marlborough 2021 Awards, $750,001 – $1.5 million Category
This project entailed coastal erosion remedial work at Seafield Terrace, Glenduan. After a major storm event there was significant damage to the existing road and services. The contract required the supply and placement of 4,200 tonne of rock armouring earthworks, extension of culverts, new culvert inlet, footpath construction, pavement construction, installation of signs and other associated works (for example zebra crossings). The rock revetment is to prevent further coastal erosion.
Key focus areas of this contract were:
* Minimal disruption to the Boulder Bank was essential.
* Close community and Iwi liaison work required
* H&S management of the public and residents
* Skilled placement of rock to form the revetment
* Working in strict timeframes
* Working in a nationally sensitive area, along with tidal constraints
This work was especially challenging as it involved working at the start of the boulder bank, which is a sensitive ecological area and a nationally significant natural land formation. It is also archaeologically significant and has significant cultural values to Iwi.
It was crucial that there was close liaison with residents, Iwi / archaeological / DOC monitoring personnel, prior to and during the contract, and strict compliance with Resource Consent conditions.
The smooth and uneventful undertaking of this project is due to exceptional management and the high performance of the team.
