Project Description

In early 2015, Taylors Contracting was approached by Fulton Hogan to undertake the earthworks for the Western Belfast Bypass. This consisted of a new four lane grade separated motorway linking Johns Road and the Northern Motorway, which was estimated to result in 17,000 fewer vehicles entering Christchurch via Belfast.

The project involved approximately 100,000m3 of topsoil stripping and respreading, 600,000m3 of imported aggregate, 10 kilometres of stormwater swales and 6 retention ponds.

After a successful tender period, construction commenced in May 2015. The project had its challenges due to some difficult ground conditions, high water tables, and tight working areas around the existing Northern Motorway and the Groynes Recreational Reserve.

The project went very well and the motorway was open 3 months ahead of the earliest expected completion date, just prior to Christmas 2017. We were delighted to have over 900 days lost time / medical treatment free days, no environmental incidents and no quality issues on completion and hand over.
